Cinema CNC, Valentine’s Day and A Rather Large Sporting Event

Cinema CNC

It’s almost the weekend, and look at the weather. Great for some end-of-season skiing, snowboarding, or even skating (I’m told the oval at the bottom of University Hill has some great ice right now). It’s exactly this sort of weather that makes me wonder about anyone who hates winter.

Which reminds me– it’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow. I’m ambivalent towards the whole thing, I don’t resent it like some people do, but I’m not huge on blowing it up, either. That said, I really enjoyed the Valentine’s Day edition of CFUR the Planet, which covered a whole range of environmentally friendly and socially conscious Valentine’s Day gifts you can give (who knew there were fair-trade condoms?) If you missed it, never fear– you can listen to it and download right here.

And whether it’s as a Valentine’s date of just a night out, I highly recommend checking out the Cinema CNC film festival this weekend. This is three days of great movies, and this year the focus seems to be on Canadian-made films. I’ve looked over everything they have on offer and I’m starting to wonder if Canadian cinema is about to undergo the renaissance that Canadian music has been in the throes of over the last decade. It seems as if we have a newfound cultural nationalism in this country .

Oh, and speaking of nationalism– I guess there’s some sort of big sporting event taking place in the province this week. You may have heard about the rules a lot of the media has to follow in order to legally cover the event, but here at CFUR we have no worries, because our coverage amounts to zero. So if you’re feeling like you need a break, check our schedule, check our podcasts, and find something you like. See you Monday.
