From Mexico to Prince George

During winter, Mexico is one of the most common place to travel for most people in Prince George. There is not a direct flight from Prince George to eastern provinces or cities in Canada, but often there is direct flight from Prince George to Mexico. This one way relationship has started to change. During past three years more ex-change students from Mexico come to Prince George to experince life in Northern BC…
Mercedes, Guillermo, and Jorge are ex-change students from Mexico, and they will be guest of show this week. Tuned to CFUR to listen to their stories.

From Tehran to Prince George

Listen Live to “Planet without Boarders” every Friday at 5:00 pm

Today, education has become one of the common reason for traveling, and depends how this fact is important to the person, he/she might choose to travel beyond the borders his/her country. Traveling to another country to continue studying for long period is much more complicated than short term visit. Challenges that the person will face through all languages barrier, cultural differences and a lot of other issues make this process more difficult.

Faramarz Bigledou is an international student from Iran. He is studying master of Economic Developments at the University of Northern British Columbia. He already has master of Business Administration (Finance) from University of Tehran. He will be at the studio during my radio show today at 5:00 pm (Pacific Time), and we will talk about his experiences and his challenges as international student in the new Academic Environment at UNBC. And what did drive him to come to Canada to continue his education.

CFUR in the Summer

Can you feel that? Summer. It’s just around the corner– heck, with the way the weather’s been the last couple of days, some could say it’s already here.

In the world of university, summer often means big changes. Students head home after being away for the first time, head out to summer jobs that could lead to careers, or, if you just graduated, enter the “real world” for the first time.

Summer also means change for CFUR. Many of our shows are ending or on hiatus for the break, so rather than throwing a bunch of reruns at you, we’ve decided to do something different: CFUR in the Summer.

What does that mean? Well, basically this: if DJs are sticking around, so is their show. If not, their shows will gradually be taken out of rotation, as we revamp our schedule. And taking their place will be more of what you want in the hot summer months: great new music.

Our tireless team will be hand-picking tracks to go with your summer schedule. This is different from what’s been done in the past, where we mostly relied on individual shows to contribute the music to our station. While we love the individual personality that comes with this method, and will continue to foster it, it also means that a lot of great songs and bands fall between the tracks and never see airplay. This is what’s changing.

CFUR in the Summer is going to be a steady stream of music, with very few breaks between tracks. As we play with the format, we’ll add it into our fall schedule under the name “the CFUR Mixtape.” Again, this doesn’t mean we’re getting rid of any shows, unless the DJs themselves have chosen to discontinue them. Air Guitar, the Fresh Sheet, Bad Not Cheap, and more will be sticking around, while talk shows like CFUR the Planet and Health on the Hill will be rerunning the entirety of their first season for people who may not have heard them the first time around as their hosts prepare for season 2.  CFUR in the Summer is meant to add more variety to our schedule, so you can be exposed to more music, as well as news about events happening around the university and the city in an up-to-date manner with live, on-the-air DJs.

The first run of this is happening this afternoon at 1:00, so take a listen and tell us what you think.

RIP Devon Clifford, Drummer of YSP!WSD!

Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Devon Clifford, drummer for You Say Party! We Say Die!. Clifford has passed away after collapsing onstage at an all-ages show in Vanouver this past Friday.

The band was back home after a cross-continental tour that concluded with their performance in Prince George last Saturday. The Vancouver show was to be a homecoming just weeks before they headed overseas for a European tour.

Spinner is reporting that Clifford collapsed onstage behind his drum kit a few songs into the band’s set, prompting lead singer Becky Ninkovic to tell audience members to call 911. Clifford was rushed to hospital, where a few details emerged via the band’s Twitter feed.

“There aren’t alot of words right now. let the doctors do their job,” read one on Saturday afternoon, followed later by, “We are devastated and trying to keep hope. He needs at miracle. Thank you.”

Early this morning, the band sent out this message: “DEVON CLIFFORD 1979 – 2010 R.I.P.”

Though an official statement through the band’s label, Paperbag Records, doesn’t give the cause of death, Spinner has reportedly been told it is the result of a brain hemorrhage, which required emergency neurosurgery and full life support prior to his passing. The label simply asks that the privacy of the family be respected during this difficult time.

CFUR Radio expresses its condolences to the band and Clifford’s friends and family in the wake of this tragedy.

You Say Party! We Say Sell Out!

We knew it would happen. You Say Party! We Say Die! at UNBC this Saturday is SOLD OUT.

Thanks to everyone who bought tickets, we really wanted to bring you a great show to round out the school year.

We should also mention that while some people have been referring to this as a “fundraiser” for CFUR, we are actually making no money on it. As a matter of fact, we would have lost cash if it weren’t for the help of Northern Toyota and NUGSS, who kicked in cash to help keep the ticket prices affordable.

We need to also thank Sound Factory, the Best Western, and the UNBC Copy Center for giving us deals on their services to help keep costs low.

For those of you who have tickets– looking forward to seeing you. To the rest of you, hopefully you’re able to make it for our next great event.

See you Saturday!
