Pemberton- Grimes

Media at Pemberton got to go into the pit and take photos for three songs. I was standing there, next to some guy named David, and just as we were taking photos and staring at each other, wideeyed over how awesome Grimes was, and how in love we were, the security guys pulled us out because we had apparently overstayed our welcome. What had felt like twenty seconds had been fifteen minutes. I clawed my way back to the front of the stage and stood, entranced, as Claire Boucher herself bopped about like some anime squirrel. She wound knobs, pressed pedals, and did what seemed to be very technical stuff (I have no idea about making electronic music, she could have been hitting the disco key on a keyboard and I would have been impressed), all the while dancing like a manic elf. Her two backup dancers whirled about, long periwinkle sweaters wrapped on their waists. Every once in a while, Grimes would throw back her head and positively GROWL. it was delightful. the atmosphere was very upbeat, and it seemed as though the music was floating in on air bubbles, as if we were underwater. Delightful. 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 210 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 211 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 212 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 213 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 214 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 215 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 216 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 217 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 218 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 219 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 220 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 221 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 222 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 223 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 224 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 225 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 226 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 227 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 228 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 229 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 230 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 231 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 232 2014 Pemberton Day 2 d 233

Comedy @ Cariboo Calling - Alfredos!

Comedy, Poetry, Slam Performances, and more Comedy!

Every other Tuesday night @ Alfredo's Pub.

Lenny Bruce, Revolutionary Comedian

Head down to Cariboo Calling, a Spoken Word event, at Alfredo’s Pub on Tuesday, July 22nd @ 8p.m.  If you have some material you want to lay down upon the gritty 80's themed pub, or to the localized area of Prince George, the opportunity awaits you at Alfredo’s!

Don’t let New York's  bohemians and hipsters have all the fun. Let’s get to it and bring on the poems, the collaboration, the improvisation, and the beer. Alfredo’s offers specials by the way… 15+ people arrive and a plate of wings will be raffled off! The continuation of this Spoken Word night depends upon attendance. If you want to reinforce the presence of Poetry, Arts, Standup, and independent thought in Prince George, come out and enjoy the scene. The best way to enhance the quality and amount of performance, performance opportunities, and the avant-garde in general, is to attend and participate. With that in mind, please feel free to join us for the evening and get the poetic ball rolling.

Don’t have a car, or don’t want to drive? The busses come right to Alfredo’s! The 15 stops in front, the 17 & 18 turn up the corner on Foothills & University Way, the 1, 11, 5 & 55 stop within a stone’s throw, and the 46, 47, 88 & 89 all stop a 15 min walk distance down 15th Ave. Sorry 91, 12, & 16, a transfer is in your future. It’s also located in an extremely flat, bicycle friendly, part of town.

Please pass the word on to any Poets, Spoken Word Artists, or aficionados you know. If you would like more information, or to receive updates about future Spoken Word events, email me at programming@cfur.ca and ask to be put on the Spoken Word Mailing List.

Special Guest:

On August 5th Mwanasi Loongo joins us for a round and some serious laughs. Performance credentials include nation wide comedy festivals and our own PG PLayhouse. How about that!? ↓

Pemberton Day 2: ZZ Ward and The Incredible Voice

Welp, I just left the ZZ Ward show. SHE AND HER BAND ARE INCREDIBLE. Her control over the audience was unbelievable. ZZ Ward prowled the stage like some sort of weird wildcat, if there were a variety of wildcat that lived exclusively at festivals and wore suit-jacket onesies (I'm not a style blogger. I have no idea what that look is called). She would peer out across the vast sea of sexy (everyone at Pemberton is hot. I'm almost worried that they hired a bunch of models and I'm the only uggo/normie here) and flick one finger in the air, and the place would just pulse in response. She played a whole lot of songs about who done her wrong, and the onlookers roared in response, obviously wanting to dismember whomever would have the audacity to hurt her. ZZ Ward would call out the names of her extremely talented band members, and they would wail on whatever instrument they had. ZZ Ward herself is a very proficient harmonica player. Never have I seen so many twenty-somethings get so excited about a harmonica. And what vocal control! Sometimes I would worry that she'd taken on too much, that the note was too high to sustain or too long to follow. She delivered every time. Her voice punched everyone listening straight in the teeth. Bravo, ZZ Ward. You are incredible. I'm a little bit in love.

Pemberton- Gord Downie & The Sadies

Gord Downie & The Sadies are the coolest. Period. The band is cool, the music is cool, Gord's hat is cool. Gord Downie, on top of being super cool, is the world's biggest ham. On top of singing the rollicking and raucous tunes he is known for, he pretended to shoot hoops, hunt fans with a spear fashioned from his mic stand, and gave Gene Simmons a run for his tongue-sticking-out money. He's the best. I love him. 2014 Pemberton day1 d 003 2014 Pemberton day1 d 004 2014 Pemberton day1 d 005 2014 Pemberton day1 d 006 2014 Pemberton day1 d 007 2014 Pemberton day1 d 008 2014 Pemberton day1 d 009 2014 Pemberton day1 d 010

Pemberton- Dan Deacon

Dan Deacon, for those who don't know, is an electronic musician and composer from Maryland.  I did not know who Dan Deacon was, but after last night's show I am diehard fan. I was in my tent when I heard a sound so groovy I had to put on pants (a huge sacrifice, as everyone knows) and wander over to Bass Camp. There he was, evangelical, a soundsmith serving up his digital sermon to the world. He shouted, he implored, he pleaded for peace and love. Anyone else, I would roll my eyes at. But doing it, Dan Deacon seemed so sincere I couldn't fault him for it. During his set, Deacon had everyone put their hands on the head of a complete stranger. He told the audience to visualize the faces of the person or people that they loved the most. Then, instructing the audience to apply intensifying pressure to the head of the person in front of them. he had the audience visualize what they felt most guilty about. Then, he told everyone to release, to put their hands in the air and dance their freedom. The crowd loved it, screaming his name and waving their limbs every which way like raving giraffes. needless to say, the music was incredible, and the light arrangement intense. At the end of his set, Dan Deacon graciously turned the applause to the crew, volunteers and staff of the festival, thanking them for his job. He then left his board, and came down to the floor, speaking with every fan who stayed behind, chatting about their lives and thanking them for enjoying his music. He even gave little old CFUR a station ID. It cannot be emphasized enough how kind, humble, and appreciative Dan Deacon was. Come for the pulsating bass, stay for the great guy who makes it. 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 024 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 026 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 025 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 023 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 022 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 021 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 020 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 019 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 018 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 017 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 016 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 015 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 014 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 013 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 012 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 011 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 010 2014 Pemberton day 1 c 009 2014 Pemberton day1 d 030 2014 Pemberton day1 d 029 2014 Pemberton day1 d 028 2014 Pemberton day1 d 027 2014 Pemberton day1 d 026 2014 Pemberton day1 d 025 2014 Pemberton day1 d 024 2014 Pemberton day1 d 023 2014 Pemberton day1 d 022 2014 Pemberton day1 d 021

Pemberton Music Festival: Day One

Pemberton Music Festival: Day 1

Pemberton, it turns out, is beautiful. It's a strikingly obvious thing to say, but so many festival grounds are not. I arrived wednesday night after a rollicking ride with two ladies I found on Ricky Rides: Pemberton, rather smartly, has a link to the ridesharing service on their website. After the long slog to the campgrounds, I set up my tent next to some kind strangers. Security at Pemberton, as I was relieved to discover, is taken very seriously. Uniformed folks abound on foot, golf cart and horseback. I've been able to leave my tent basically unattended (but for the watchful eye of the friendly gentleman in the golden shorts one site over) for the whole day and nothing has happened. It's a credit to the organizers that I've almost forgotten that I'm here for a music festival. The mountains surrounding the site are so beautiful that I am left feeling like I am simply here to camp out with 15,000 nice people. A wonderful time is being had by all and the festival grounds have not even opened yet.

 Tonight's lineup:
