CFUR's Study Tips (Or, what to do when failure is inevitable)

The time has come for students to study hard. As CFUR is your community campus radio station, we've put together a list of suggestions for how to best prepare for your midterms.

1) Study, sleep well, eat well, manage your stress levels.

ORRRRRR......

2) Throw caution to the wind, greater men and women than you have met the harsh winds and cold climes of studying and have still failed. instead, gather your courage, resolve to live life to the fullest until your inevitable academic doom, and go out and support these fine events:

Secret Broadcast Disrupts Peace in the East

During your exodus to the big city, it's only natural to catch some trouble from the local authorities at some point.

The Calgary conglomerated band Secret Broadcast moved out to Toronto a while ago and have been making waves on big radio. While wedging their heel into the Top 40, the quatro went for a joy ride with a go-pro...

No, that was not a rigged ending :) Good to see they're still getting their kicks in so far from home.

Thanks Eric+ for keeping us up to date

Black Spruce Bog and Power Duo were at Riley's this Weekend, it Ruled

Anticipating a good old stomp around, we rolled into the welcoming doors of Riley’s, past the smokers who were shivering in their coats. Riley’s had been torn apart considerably in the adventure that was the will they/won’t they conversion into a Holiday Inn. You could still see where the edging had been ripped from the walls, and the bar didn’t have any beer on tap, as that too had been ripped out. When I was in the ladies’ room, the paper towel dispenser fell off the wall; a waitress was later seen presenting it to the bartender, saying “you deal with this.” The Riley’s staff were clearly happy to be back, and they were warm and funny as usual. The crowd was clearly happy to be there, and everyone I spoke with expressed happiness that the best little live venue in town was back open.
Much to my regret, I missed Power Duo, the talented and appropriately named two piece act consisting of Naomi Kavka and Corbin Spensley. Apparently, they were awesome, and are excellent performers, and it was my loss. Nonetheless, it was an excellent night, set to the wonderful sounds of local band and CFUR favourites Black Spruce Bog (disclosure for ethical reporting purposes: everyone in the band has volunteered, deejayed, or worked for CFUR at one point or another). The Riley’s atmosphere was back, and everyone was feeling it; the room was full of people dancing and laughing and stomping their feet. The familiar twang of Black Spruce Bog’s northern blues folk warmed all of our feet to dance and the room was full of merriment!
At one point, vocalist, mandolinist and trumpet soloist, Amy Wyn Blanding said, “we’ve just returned from our tour, and we had a lot of good shows, but there were no crowds quite like this.” It was apparent that Black Spruce Bog was just as happy to be in Prince George as Prince George was to have them. Indeed, Prince George was very happy to have them: local grocery store Home Sweet Home sold out of Black Spruce Bog pre-sale tickets days before the show, and when 8:30 Saturday night rolled around, the entire place was packed to the gills and sold out.

When Black Spruce Bog finally ended the night with their new single, “Lorne Creek Mountain Man”, sung by musical jack-of-all-trades Jeremy Pahl, not a person in the room wasn’t up on their feet. Black Spruce Bog’s debut album is coming soon, so be sure to contact them at http://blacksprucebog.com/contact/ to preorder it on vinyl or as a CD. T-shirts are also available.

The Swan Song Radio Doc!

catch David Swanson's killer radio doc detailing the bypassed cultural frenzy that exists in Riga, Latvia.

swansong

From Dave's soundcloud page:

I think Canadians have a tendency to romanticize Europe. I know I do. We have this mental image of Europe that has this almost fairy-tale like quality. When I was a kid, I remember thinking that a great battle had happened on every street and every city was home to a handful of Gothic castles and a limitless number of famous painters, poets and philosophers.

This is probably not the case but it's hard to deny Europe's contribution to the Western art world. In late March 2014, I went to Latvia to collect content for a radio documentary. Riga, Latvia's capital, was chosen as the 2014 European Capital of Cultural. A part of this campaign is inviting media people from around the world to Riga to create cultural stories about Riga.

I got to speak with a number of really interesting people from Riga's creative community and capture their stories. In this documentary, I speak with the Director of the Latvian Centre of Contemporary Art, the founder of Riga's most prominent electronic music label, an innovative Latvian folk musician whose music sounds like the soundtrack to an ancient mythical forest, an art manger who is transforming an abandoned Soviet building into an interdisciplinary art centre, an abstract visual artist who enjoys drawing on the walls and a spray can artist who paints giant street murals.

Another Human's Opinion: Back Yard BBQ!

Like Garrett, I was also allured to the annual Back Yard  BBQ with CFUR swag. So after an afternoon nap I hoped on the 7:36 bus up to campus. The bus was jam packed with new students dotting the last of their summer clothes and buzzing with the anticipation of this 15$ event- a quite dignified sounding event with both beer gardens and security.

The energy of that bus ride floated on to campus, dusting the green grass under sunken skies with the hope of a fun party. I stepped off of the bus and heard the rollicking sounds of the Yukon’s very own Speed Patrol. Speed Patrol is a pop punk/rock band with sounds of Sum 41, Blink 182 and a touch of Simple plan in the mix. Though the crowd was small and the sky too bright for anyone to really let loose, pockets of rock faithful’s boogied hard to the tenacious offerings of the energetic foursome. I was extremely impressed by the bands energy and musicianship – they gave the crowd every ounce of themselves with a seamless fluidity throughout the entire set. It is too bad Garrett missed this act, as they had a fun little game. They played 30 seconds or so of 11 different rock classics, and whoever could name all of the songs would win some Speed Patrol swag. Garett would surely have won as the 11 songs were truly reminiscent of classic rock via Garett and Karl 2000. They rounded out their set with a cover of The Darkness’ “I Believe in A Thing Called Love” which had even the most dignified people shaking their butts, a very fun song indeed.

And then came DJ Ant! A tough slot between two rock shows, and the time barely clocking in at 9 pm. This however did not phase dance commander Ant, and within a few minutes he had the crowd gyrating to the sweet sounds of bass under the sweet stars in the sky. I remember noting, audibly, that DJ Ant took us on a ride though many different era’s biggest pop songs – “Jessie’s Girl” in a throwback to the 80’s, up to the present with some LMFAO. There were many more crowd pleasers tucked in there, breaking the ice between strangers as everyone could sing along. DJ Ant was successful in jacking up the energy of the night, drawing out dancers from the corners of beer gardens and shyness, delivering the crowd both what they wanted and needed to get them ready for an adventurous endeavour.

Once the mood was set, DJ Ant bowed out while pop rockers Pirate Radio took the stage. A mix of everything is how I remembered this band – pop, rock, electronic, hip-hop, reggae. No need to define or label these people, they have their own thing going on. And if one word could sum up their sound and presence it was ENERGETIC. The lead singer had amazing hair and a wicked head bang. I climbed up a barricade, just a tad, to better view the crowd. Well, might as well have been at some stadium show the way the crowd was roaring. We had people on top of people on top of dancing feet, it was a little slice of rock n roll enigma right on the small patch of grass beside the bus loop. Pirate Radio finished to a very appreciative crowd who then filled free buses to go downtown and spread the beautiful chaotic energy of the night to the thirsty streets of down town Prince George.

Back Yard BBQ – A+ in rounding up humans and giving them fun by stuffing their ear holes with music.
