Earth Day rally sprouted in downtown Prince George plaza
A contingent of concerned citizens gathered together in downtown Prince George–Lheidli T’enneh for an Earth Day rally on April 22nd. A number of speakers addressed the crowd to encourage a stronger connection to land and place. Among them was Francois Prince, a local guidance counsellor who shared his own healing journey that was made possible through making meaningful connection to his language, culture, and the earth itself. Also present were co-organizers Jennifer Mathews and Michelle Connolly of Conservation North, who felt it was critical to make in-person connections with people, especially on the eve of a Federal Election.
Meanwhile land defender Sabina Dennis also took to stage, who preceded activist Peter Ewert, who both admonished a system they see as prioritizing profit over people while it exploits the land. A recurring concern amidst attendees was that amidst a looming trade dispute between Canada and the USA, many environmentally damaging projects could be approved and expedited in the pursuit of domestic sovereignty. The worry being that we may pursue a course of action that we grow to regret, and can't undo.
