UNBC undergraduate student and Sustainability Office Hydroponics Coordinator, Madi Tokarchuck has kicked off a hydroponic pilot program accessed through the institution’s Green Grant, to explore food security solutions. She spoke to CFURadio as she popped the first lettuce seeds into three hydroponic stations set up in the Thirsty Moose Pub on campus.
While it’s not an immediate solution to establish local food sovereignty, it’s an early step in that direction as this is the first student-led hydroponic initiative on campus. If this pilot project goes well, there are plans for expansion as revenue from the sales of leafy greens to the pub could sustain the program.
The Students for a Green University‘s flagship event, Green Week occurs March 17-21 2025 and Tokarchuck is already excited to show off some locally grown greens there as she walks G-Force volunteers and anyone in attendance how to build their own hydroponic system.
