“Food charter” to push for local food sovereignty in Prince George–Lheidli T’enneh

Roanne Whitticase is spearheading the Food Systems North PG Project, a grant-supported attempt to coordinate disparate parts of our regional food system in Prince George–Lheidli T’enneh. From consumers, and distributors, to producers, the food system is a touchpoint for everyone. Separately though, these parties do not have much sway when it comes to influencing what we eat, how we get it, and so on. To amplify the voices of these entities, Whitticase intends to round these parties up, and determine parallel priorities through a Food Charter in order to push for common causes.

Stressing the importance of community engagement, Whitticase encourages pretty much anyone who eats to take an interest. She says the timing of this initiative may be fortunate as people are showing interest in local food sovereignty amidst the trade dispute with the US. The community is invited to participate in the early stages of the Food Charter’s creation on April 14th, with more events to follow.
