Directed by Daniel Stark of 6ix Sigma productions, North of Queer is a documentary focusing on the lived experiences of three 2SLGBTQIA+ community members in northern BC, exploring what has changed over time, what remains, and what the future holds for queer identity in the north. Executive Producer of the film Laura Binette, joined CFURadio for a conversation ahead of the November 14th premiere at the Prince George Playhouse. Securing funding through Women and Gender Equality Canada nearly two years ago for the project, her, and the entire crew are now more than ready to press play upon journeying to the finish line.

This is the first time a documentary of this length and quality has been centred on northern BC’s queer culture. While it documents histories not publicly shared or celebrated before, Binette indicated the film opens room for more exploration should the opportunity for a historical project happen again, as details on Prince George–Lheidli T’enneh’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community prior to the 1990s are scant. Binette contemplated, "...because people just didn’t… they were scared to talk about their history back then, and even the ones from that era, still are a little bit hesitant…” Despite having seen the film a number of times over the course of numerous edits, she says she will still most likely shed some tears during the much anticipated premiere.
Those tears won’t be present during the cocktail hour ahead of the screening though, as in typical Northern BC Queer Connection Society (NBCQCS) fashion, the event will include a few moments to celebrate the occasion. Binette is also the Executive Director for NBCQS, and is not missing the opportunity for some flair, “...it’s a high fashion event so you can wear something cool.” While the pre-party will happen on the red carpet, the afterparty spills over into Ignite Nightclub, featuring a DJ, dancing, go go dancers, burlesque and more.
