University of Northern BC (UNBC) Masters student, Courtney Dallaire, is pursuing a Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (NRES) thesis in the Outdoor Recreation, Conservation, and Tourism Management (ORTM) stream of the department, and has received a $26k Canada Graduate Research Scholarship–Masters grant to study unconventional gardening as a path towards community-based conservation action in northern BC. Essentially focusing on non-commercial pesticide-free gardens, Dallaire simultaneously follows her passion with this research. Having worked in conventional gardening that sought to increase property value, and unconventional styles that served to increase a sense of fulfillment, she developed a strong interest in the subject and a connection to the earth. Exploring this connection that people have with their gardens is at the core of her academic exploration, alongside growing food security concerns. When roads to Prince George–Lheidli T’enneh close, sometimes the food on the grocery store shelf becomes scant. As Dallaire illustrates, “If food can’t get up here, it would be nice to have other options to not just rely on things coming from elsewhere.”
