Comet Catalina To Buzz The Planet - Jan 2016

space-art-comet-encountr-sam-deitze.jpg

There is a new comet in the early morning sky that can be seen before dawn. Comet 2013 US10 (Catalina) has travelled an estimated one million years from the distant Oort Cloud and will pass the one and only time through our solar system. Closest approach to Earth is on January 12, 2016. Once it’s gone it will never return. It should be a naked eye object towards the end of December as seen from dark locations and away from light pollution. Binoculars and even better, a telescope will show the green glow of the comet’s nucleus.

There is a finder chart on Gary Boyle's website: www.wondersofastronomy.com

The Rat Queen-- Goodbye to Rdio

Hey CFUR!Recently my favourite streaming service died. It was RDIO. it was the best, because it emphasized the social aspect of listening to music, namely, that the best music recommendations you're going to get are going to be from your friends. Alas and alack, they were right. unfortunately, RDIO remained sort of the audiophile's option, refusing to get into bed with labels and promote top forty artists, or give away subscriptions. I mean, streaming services are still a capitalist nightmare in terms of money paid to actual artists for their time and labour. but if you're a music fan and want to just listen to absolutely everything all the time forever, rdio was the best one. I have to sully my pretty white underthings in the filth-bath that is spotify now, but my ultimate satisfaction lies in the knowledge that hopefully this rdio death is a canary in the coal mine, and a more sustainable method of streaming music is developed. I would pay $100 a month for rdio to be sustainable for artists and the app company, but until that happens, I'll be trying spotify. like some sort of common layabout.

Anyways, here's my nightmare disaster show.

Bad Not Cheap accidentally took some embarrassing time off from radio to get a handle on adulting. But now it's December and Darcie has started knitting ugly things once again, and grad school is about to hit the road.

Tune in on Wednesday at 6:00pm BC time (ha ha) and hear everything that you've ever wondered about Darcie's days without you.

Eggs in Purgatory because it's November on Suppertime!

20151124_085242.jpg

20151124_085242 This week on suppertime we cook a very simple yet satisfying meal. It can be a breakfast lunch or dinner or desert. And it's very good because it is November and people are busy and frantic and feeling hellish, yet so cold, and this quick one pot meal is warm and comforting.

Go ahead and jazz this sauce up. I like it super simple and garlicy with a small amount of spice but you just do what you want!

This recipe makes 4 poached eggs

1 can of whole or diced tomatoes

1/2 tsp or more ( go up by increments of 1/2 tsp for more spiceyness) of red pepper flakes

3 cloves of garlic, minced

4 eggs

mozza cheese

fresh basil

  • In a frying pan or pot, warm up about 2 tbsp of oil on low-medium heat
  • add garlic and chili flakes - over low heat, let these little buddies sizzle together
  • After about 5 minutes on low heat ( do not burn! ) add a can of tomatoes
  • add some salt and pepper
  • raise heat to about mediumish and let simmer for at least 15 minutes ( the longer the better)
  • raise heat to about medium high so the eggs don't drastically bring down the temperature
  • Once bubbling away on medium high, crack your eggs into the sauce
  • let bubble with the lid off for about 5 minutes
  • reduce heat to medium and put a lid over your eggs
  • depending how many eggs you are cooking, the times may vary. check back in about 5 minutes
  • once the eggs look close to your preferred doneness, add some slices of mozza or any cheese you have on top and put the lid back on to melt your cheese
  • top off with fresh basil and serve!
  • eat with toast! or for supper with noooodles! or desert, ice cream! just kidding

Listen to an Italian/hell/devil/fire/frantic inspired playlist!
