CFURadio Youth Academy 2017, after three awesome radio camps, is officially over!
Each of the 2 week programs allowed youths age 12-17 to learn the art of radio and, at the end, create their own show! Their show topics may have ranged from debating the act of putting pineapple on pizza to serious issues that face teenagers... but one thing was consistent across the board: each camper had learned so many new skills and they all had become quite talented radio hosts.
They were all able to run their shows by themselves, not to mention the many IDs, PSAs, sound FXs, and interviews they created leading up to show day. Both camp counselors agree that the Academy was an incredibly great, and fun, experience to watch the kids learn and grow over the 2 short weeks they got to spend with them.
Of course a huge thank you to the grants from Radiometres and Canada Summer Jobs along with our Big Thaw Sponsors: Chernoff Thompson Architects, Digital Umbrella Creative, Sound Factory, and Team Powerhouse Realty. Without this support, camp would not have been possible.
CFUR looks forward to next year, and what that camp may bring
Three performers are coming together on August 1st at Nancy O’s. Wax Mannequin is teaming up with Scott Dunbar and Jeremy Stewart to create a performance that should not be missed
Wax Mannequin is a well-travelled folk phenomenon who has had countless live performances at venues and festivals. His style has been described as "a hybrid of Bruce Cockburn and Frank Zappa" and through his music his influence seeps into the poetic heart of this country.
Scott Dunbar is a one man band who started his career by busking in the streets of Montréal. He is a singer who accompanies himself with accordion, guitar, and a wide variety of eclectic percussion pieces. Everything from a suitcase to a rusted chain is used to create his signature sound that is unmistakable and has captivated audiences both live and online.
Jeremy Stewart is a poet, musician, and community arts organizer. On top of being an integral part of the Prince George Arts community he has performed at music festivals all over BC with his band The Cottonweeds, toured Canada with his rock band Jeremy Stewart & the Rest, and toured as lead guitarist with Juno nominee Marcel Gagnon.
It is only $10 to check out all three of these performers, and the show starts at 8PM.
If you're looking to be apart of a great experience, Artswells,is still happening from August 4th to 7th
There have been multiple festivals in the region that have unfortunately been forced to cancel due to the wildfires raging across BC. Both organizers and performing artists are very grateful that the festival is able to go ahead, and that Hwy 97 has opened up allowing visitors to arrive from both the North and South.
The festival features 12 stages, 120 musicians, 10 theatre acts, 20 artists, and heaps of locally made food. In general ... a pretty amazing time.
