November’s Rain in Prince George Melted Snow, Moved Tears, and Helped Restore The Water Table

Following a photogenic flurry of snow in late November, a warming trend interrupted Prince George’s entrance to December in a slew of slush and rain as our fluffy white blanket was nearly ripped away. Shovels were set aside, and skis sat idle.

Beyond the more obvious impacts on Prince George residents’ winter recreation, we spoke to Dr. Joseph Shea, Associate Professor of UNBC’s Department of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, for a perspective on this shift in precipitation. Were we inundated with precipitation, or was that just… normal?

With two sustained years of drought under our belt, is any form of precipitation a welcome sight, or do we need it in a form we can shovel off the driveway to make an impact? Walking us through the rainy nuances of November rain, Dr. Shea illustrates the nature of our area's hydrology and how it can impact us right here in Prince George Lheidli T’enneh.
