Wood waste to bio-oil production plant opened in Prince George

As of January 14th, construction has been completed on Chuntoh Ghuna, the world’s largest facility to transform wood waste to bio-oil. The plant uses water, heat, and pressure to transform biomass into liquid biofuel in a process known as hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL).

The project is built on Canfor’s Intercontinental Pulp Mill site, and the name translates from Dakelh as “The Forest Lives”.

Speaking to CFURadio from the Future Fuels Forum is was Tessa Gill, the external relations lead for Arbios Biotech, a company which developed the project.

Production is slated to begin in 2025. Before the first barrel of bio-oil emerges from the facility though, it must complete its commissioning process.
