Celebration music station on Suppertime

This week I made some celebration appetizers to celebrate the fact I have bacon in my fridge. I paired these bacon detectables with a playlist I like to entertain with. Something for everyone - and a little boogie potential too.

Bacon Wrapped Asparagus & Mushrooms

  • Wrap your veggies in bacon. I did 3 skinny asparagus' per bundle.
  • Do this tightly so you don't need to use a toothpick to hold everlasting together!
  • Cook at about 400 for 10-15 minutes.
  • Broil for about 5 to crisp up bacon to preferred doneness.
  • Sprinkle with goats cheese

A Playlist to celebrate/entertain with:

Stevie Wonder - Uptight ( Everything's Alright)

Patrick Wilson - Quittin Time

The Velvet underground - Some Kinda Love

Opossum - Blue Meanies

Beach Day - Stay

Shannon And The Clams - Into A dream

King Khan And The Shrines - Land of The Freak

Chumbawamba - Tubthumping ( palate cleanser)

The Talking Heads - Slippery People

Deehoof - Super Duper Rescue Heads!

Electric Six - Danger! High Voltage

T Rex. - Born To Boogie

Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Dragon Queen

Karl Domes is the NCRA's Volunteer of The Year!

Karl Domes, CFUR volunteer extroardinaire, has been rewarded for his efforts. The National Campus and Community Radio Association bestowed upon Karl the honour of Volunteer of The Year, across all of Canada, at their Community Radio Awards. A jury, composed of seven radio professionals from across the country, found Karl to be "the person who has worked tirelessly for [a] station without getting any money." The jury listened to clips of Karl's show, The Yellowhead Cafe, which showcases local music, especially Karen Cruise. They read letters from the Music and Program Directors detailing his absolute dedication to CFUR, his kindness and good cheer, and his devotion to the Northern Audio Archive, which he has singlehandedly archived and organized. The jury listened to clips from Karl's monthly spot promoting CFUR and the Northern Audio Archive on CBC Daybreak North, where his relentless enthusiasm and knowledge have made him a favourite for local listeners. Karl was against some stiff competition but ultimately won!

All of our volunteers are fantastic, but it's pretty special when someone as exceptional as Karl gets recognition for his contributions on a national scale. Karl goes above and beyond, and we're very lucky to have him knocking about the studio. Karl will get a fancy trophy and a certificate, and perhaps a cookie. Thank you, Karl, for working so tirelessly and passionately for CFUR. You truly deserve this award, and it couldn't happen to a nicer and worthier guy.

Spencer Krug and Potato Salad on Suppertime

This week I focused on Spencer Krug, Canadian rockstar extraordinaire who has been a force in the bands Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade, Frog Eyes, Swan Lake, and Fifths of Seven. His current project is Moonface. I paired Spencer with a classic potato salad, this is a rock solid dish that has a bit of funk to it. Just like Spencer.

This serves about 4

2 big potatoes boiled, cubed, and cooled

4 eggs hard boiled

¼ cup mayo

2 dill pickles diced

1 tbsp pickle juice

4 radishes sliced thinly

4 green onion sliced

1 tbsp of fresh dill, or 1 tsp dry dill

  • Mix all of these things together! Yay!

Moonface – Fast Peter

Sunset Rubdown– Stadiums and Shrines

Sunset Rubdown – Idiot Heart

Moonface – Teary Eyes and Bloody Lips

Sunset Rubdown - Apollo and the Buffalo and Anna Anna Anna Oh!

Wolf Parade – I’ll Believe in Anything

Sunset Rubdown – Snakes Got a Leg

Moonface – Dreamland Ep Marimba and Shit Drums

Gary Fjellgaard Live at CFUR

CFUR Studios had an exciting treat yesterday: we were paid a visit to our live studio by Canadian country legend, Gary Fjellgaard. Gary is a member of the BC Country Music Hall of Fame, he's won Male Vocalist of the Year at the Junos, the CCMAs, the BCCMAs, and Country Music News. Mr. Fjellgaard has also won several humanitarian awards for his work with environmental initiatives and for his song, "I Apologize", dedicated to survivors of residential schools. Gary is a frequent collaborator with Canadian legend, Valdy. He and his wife, Lynn, are celebrating their 58th wedding anniversary this summer, and his love for her shines throughout his songs. We were honoured and privileged to listen to his beautiful songwriting and touching vibratto. For anyone wishing to see this living legend in person, head to his show at Artspace on June 6th, time TBA. The CFUR crew will see you there! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2EHnx6ASWw

The Pixies World Tour

The Pixies are oot and aboot as we stereotypically say in Canada.

Off to Australia to play back to back to back shows in the coveted Sydney opera house, this band has reached the ears of millions since their humble beginnings in Boston, MA. The travelling comes after picking up a new bass player, Paz Lenchantin, and dropping "Indie Cindy." Meeting unfavourable critical reviews and fields of murmeling rumours discussing the departure of Kim Deal with apathy, the band as always, has decided not to give a rats ass and carry on.

The new album sounds slick, and is widely available for legal streaming. Have a listen and decide for yourself. Before we lose you though, check out what drummer David Lovering had to say about the upcoming tour. We wrangled an exclusive interview with him right here at Prince George's own CFUR FM:
